S2:E3 Playing with Baby Hippos and Celebrating Ourselves
Meet your Season TWO Co-Host: Alexa Howell
Alexa is a brand strategist and business mentor for small business owners who want to grow their business in a way that feels aligned, authentic, and without burning the candle at both ends of the stick.
It is incredibly hard to show up publicly (IRL or on camera) day after day without having doubts. Yet that’s exactly what we have to do as business owners.
Alexa and Erin discuss celebrating others’ success without overanalyzing it (aka Tall Poppy Syndrome). Sometimes that might include NOT SCROLLING!
We also chat about unrealistic dream jobs, reality TV, and Amy Poehler.
Celebrating other women for success without adding an asterisk should be easier than it seems to be. All you need to do is open any social media app, and you’ll see business owners analyzing launch successes, complaining about it, or showcasing how you can replicate them exactly.
There is no way to participate in that type of behavior AND show up yourself online. Down deep, you’re creating content that is assuming people will also be judging you that hard. I don’t know how you can show up daily with that in the back of your mind.
Alexa and I discuss all the ways we can celebrate others and ourselves without adding a caveat.
Write down daily wins or joyous moments
Notice jealousy and reframe it
Build a community of people in business and life who will always celebrate you
Take screenshots
Bingo board your way to celebrations
“As a woman, if you grow too big, you really are so susceptible to criticism and other people like knocking you down immediately for that success and how it makes us feel less safe even going for that level of success.” - Alexa

I’m your host, Erin!
Systems pro, avid fiction reader, and new Portugal resident
It takes a minute to get to know the real me. So when I decided to start a podcast, I knew it had to be different than your usual show. While most guest-led episodes limit us to just one conversation, I wanted Two Desks Down to be more than that.
Here, you’ll learn you aren’t the only one having that problem, business advice from experts, and what books to add to your TBR.
two desks down
This is the small business podcast where you can drop in - just two desks down - to get advice from people who get it, make a new friend, and have some fun. Every season’s a new guest. Every episode is less than an hour. And every single one’s a good listen.
