S2:E5 How to Create a Free Lead Magnet for an Online Business

Meet your Season TWO Co-Host: Alexa Howell

Alexa is a brand strategist and business mentor for small business owners who want to grow their business in a way that feels aligned, authentic, and without burning the candle at both ends of the stick.

Alexa steps into her expertise and guides Erin as she figures out what to offer as a free opt-in for her business. This is the second of the peer coaching episodes where we focus on one person’s struggles. Be sure to listen to episode 4 if you liked this format!

I like to think of problems as a maze that we don't always know what direction this is gonna take. And so the goal is to ask questions and then see like what doors open and then just kinda like follow that.” - Alexa

We dive into the ideal clients, what their current struggles are, and what makes sense for a four-week free challenge where the goal is to increase email subscribers.

The rapid-fire questions include discussions on why heading to bed with a book means you don’t have a set bedtime, the best birthday treat, and how millennials will never answer the phone.

In this peer coaching episode, Erin (me!) describes wanting to create a free challenge to bring in more ideal clients to her email list. Alexa prompts Erin with questions to discuss good options for the freebie.

  • Who are your ideal clients

  • What is a common desire they have before working with you

  • What might be nice if they had done before they worked with you

  • Where do you always see room for improvement

While my hiring free download is loaded with information, I wanted to focus on the live element of a freebie and provide videos that would bring the lead along with me. This would give them an opportunity to understand how I think and set them up to want to work with me.

After this episode was recorded, I went on to create the Offboarding Overhaul where I sent 4 actions, one per week, over the month of August. Those inside mapped out their current offboarding, identified gaps based on my prompts, created new material or edited the current one, and built the automation for delivery. I brought in 35 people to this live challenge

It’s now available as an evergreen free email challenge. Four weeks to Overhaul your Offboarding

What's interesting is if you ask someone where their roadblock is, what's causing them the most pain, versus sitting down and mapping out their process with them, you will find two different answers.”- Erin

It's very much like having a rock in your shoe, but like, you know, something catastrophic happened the week before, and you're like, I'm not thinking about the rock in my shoe right now.” - Alexa

I’m your host, Erin!

Systems pro, avid fiction reader, and new Portugal resident

It takes a minute to get to know the real me. So when I decided to start a podcast, I knew it had to be different than your usual show. While most guest-led episodes limit us to just one conversation, I wanted Two Desks Down to be more than that.

Here, you’ll learn you aren’t the only one having that problem, business advice from experts, and what books to add to your TBR.

two desks down

This is the small business podcast where you can drop in - just two desks down - to get advice from people who get it, make a new friend, and have some fun. Every season’s a new guest. Every episode is less than an hour. And every single one’s a good listen.
